The dam wall at Hinze is a flat, fully paved kilometre-long crossing with Advancetown Lake stretching out on one side and the green Nerang River valley dropping away on the other. Originally built in 1976 and significantly raised in 2011, this is the Gold Coast's main drinking water supply, but most people come for the walk, the mountain bikes, or a coffee at View Cafe before heading up into Springbrook. The Peter Hallinan Mountain Bike Precinct draws everyone from beginners to serious trail riders. Prams, wheelchairs, and joggers all share the dam wall path without issue. One honest note: the wall is fully exposed, and Queensland summer sun turns it brutal by mid-morning. Come early, bring water, and wear a hat. Public transport doesn't reach here, so you'll need a car or a short Uber from Nerang.

Before heading up into the mountains to explore Springbrook National Park, we made Hinze Dam our first stop of the day. It’s not only the main water supply for the Gold Coast but also a beautifully scenic spot to instantly relax and unwind. Impressive Engineering meets Nature: Seeing the massive concrete spillway and dam structure in person is quite striking. The contrast between the expansive, peaceful reservoir water on one side and the lush green valley on the other is stunning. Framed by today's brilliant blue sky and fluffy clouds, every angle looked like a postcard. A Fantastic Dam Walkway: There is a wide, fully paved pathway that allows you to walk right across the top of the dam wall. Online reviewers frequently mention this as a local hidden gem for cycling, walking, and morning runs. Standing up there, feeling the gentle breeze and looking out over the endless water, is incredibly refreshing. The View Cafe: The facilities are well-maintained, featuring the aptly named "View Cafe". Many visitors highly recommend grabbing a coffee here before heading into the national park, taking a moment to enjoy the serene natural surroundings. As a gateway to the Gold Coast hinterland, it's definitely worth a 30-minute stopover to stretch your legs, take in the views, and recharge before continuing the adventure!

The Gold Coast's Recreational Oasis Hinze Dam, is the Gold Coast's main water supply, and is much more than just a large body of water, it’s a beautifully developed recreational area offering stunning panoramic views, excellent amenities, and world-class mountain biking. Located in the Advancetown area of the hinterland, it’s a perfect spot for families, cyclists, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape into nature, complete with a popular on-site cafe. The Dam Wall Walkway: Sun, Heat, and Views The walk across the top of the main dam wall is a must-do, offering spectacular 3-kilometre views over Advancetown Lake on one side and the Nerang River catchment on the other. A Critical Heat Warning: Visitors, especially in the Queensland summer months (November to March), must be prepared for the intense conditions on the dam wall. This path offers almost zero shade and is fully exposed to the sun and heat. The sun's intensity can be extreme. Hats, sunglasses, and a generous application of broad-spectrum sunscreen are essential, even on mildly cloudy days. The concrete and asphalt surface absorbs and reflects heat, making the temperature feel significantly hotter than the surrounding parklands. If you plan to walk or cycle the full length and back (a 6 km return journey), carry plenty of water and avoid the mid-day sun (11 am to 3 pm). The path is wide, paved, and flat, making it ideal for cycling, jogging, prams, and those with mobility issues, provided they manage the sun exposure. The Peter Hallinan Mountain Bike Precinct Hinze Dam is a true paradise for cyclists, home to the Peter Hallinan Mountain Bike Precinct—a dedicated network of purpose-built trails maintained by the Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club. The precinct offers multiple trails with varying difficulty levels, making it suitable for everyone from families to seasoned experts. Enjoy.

What a lovely spot to go to. You can walk along the wall of the dam. It is wheelchair friendly paths, but I'm not sure if the tracks are. There are some wildlife around as well near the cafe or in the cafe. Highly recommend going to have a look.

I’ve been considering visiting Hinze Dam for a long time and today is the day. I had a hearty and delicious meal at View Cafe and the place is tranquil that all you can hear is the sounds of the nature. In my opinion, the golden view angle is definitely the first corner you reach from View Cafe and you’ll see the fabulous symmetrical landscape of the reservoir. Although I visited here in February, there are often breezes coming so it’s not that hot. It’s definitely worth taking the time to walk around a such breathtaking place. However, the biggest problem is that none of the public transportation will travel to this underrated spot but you can still save some money by taking the bus and get off at a bus stop in Nerang or Highland Park, and book an Uber from the bus stop to here. Last but not least, if you have the chance to visit here on sunny day like I did, you should definitely come or you might regret it.

Beautiful location and an easy walk. There were people of all ages including kids with bikes. Very calm and well maintained. I even saw some wildlife.
