Modern Japanese by way of hibachi grill and wine bar. Moonlight opened in late 2022 and quickly became one of Byron's most talked-about restaurants. The charcoal grill is the centrepiece — expect blistered edamame, tuna tataki, and wagyu skewers matched with a sake-forward drinks list.

What People Say
Had an amazing experience at Moonlight Japanese Restaurant in Byron. The food was incredible — each dish that came out somehow managed to be even better than the last. The flavours were outstanding and the hibachi grill dishes were absolutely delicious. The prawns and tataki really hit the spot. Such a delightful dining experience from start to finish. Really great service. Highly recommend!
Moonlight is our absolute favourite Byron Bay restaurant! Consistently delicious food, friendly, efficient staff and a chic, relaxed vibe! We prefer to sit on the verandah but have also dined inside and at the chef’s counter (watching all the action)! Do yourself a favour! You will not be disappointed!
As part of our girls trip, we booked Moonlight quite early and were so looking forward to it. We were sooooooooo disappointed with the dinner. First, the portions - the portions were tiny, we had Hokkaido scallops, and although they are famous for their size, the ones we were served for as tiny as pennies , and tasted not that fresh. Secondly, the salmon crackers were so salty that we drank our sparking water non stop. Thirdly, the wagyu steak was too stringy, we had to spit out the unchewable part. To be honest, best dish of the night was the chips! Finally as we were paying for the bill, they charged us $5 per person for sparkling water!!!!! If you had 10 people it would have costed $50 - just for water. At the end of the meal, we paid $325 for 4 of us but were left half starving. We walked straight to No Bones, and had to ordered 3 mains to satisfy our appetite. And they only charged us $5 in total for 2 bottles of water. All I can say is, I felt like I’ve been scammed because this restaurant does not deserve a 4.7 rating.
Good food, good service. 24$ for 2 scallops is pricey but they were delicious. The miso glazed salmon from the hibachi grill was cooked perfectly, probably the best item on the menu. A must try.
Moonlight is THE BEST RESTAURANT I have ever been to. Went here with my boyfriend and was genuinely amazed at every dish - they’re packed with flavour and at the same time simplistic. Would recommend sitting at the bar as this makes it feel like an experience. Was so shocked by the food, I told my sister to visit when she went to Byron and she was just as amazed. Will be coming back to Byron just for this restaurant. WOW!!
