Tallow Beach
Byron Bay · Activities & Tours
(34 reviews)
Four kilometres of near-empty sand stretching south from Cape Byron to the edge of Arakwal National Park. Tallow is the beach locals retreat to when the Main Beach car park fills up before 9am in January. No kiosk, no patrolled swimming flags most of the year, no tour buses. Just a long, exposed stretch of Pacific coastline backed by she-oaks and banksia scrub. The surf here runs heavier than Belongil and the rips are real, so read the water before you commit. Walk north toward the Cape and the crowds thin fast. Early mornings in winter, you'll often have a kilometre of beach entirely to yourself. Bring everything you need.

What People Say
Great beach! Much less crowded than the Main Beach, with wide open space.
The Tallow Beach side is very quiet, which I loved. It’s located next to a national park and stretches out beautifully — perfect for a long walk or run, as the sand is quite firm. I saw some surfers there too. It’s much less crowded compared to the Main Beach.
Outstanding beach. No life guard so go there if you're a good swimmer because there is some strong current. It takes a little walk through the woods to get there (5 mins tops!) but it's well worth it!
Great beach with clear water and not as busy as most. Dogs allowed off leash.
Quiet, sandy, bliss. We took a lovely walk along this beach and the waves were wonderful
