Railway Park and Children Playground

(106 reviews)
The old railway line that once ran through Byron Bay left behind more than nostalgia. Railway Park sits on Jonson Street, a flat, shaded green space that locals treat as the town's de facto backyard. The playground draws families away from the beach crowds, particularly in the middle of the day when the sand gets brutal. Kids cycle through on their way to the main street; parents claim a bench. It's low-key by design. No entry fee, no booking, no agenda. The park connects the town centre to the rail corridor walking and cycling path, which makes it a natural starting point if you're heading toward the Arts Factory end of town on two wheels. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light comes through the trees and the temperature drops to something reasonable.

What People Say
Surprised at the good reviews. The equipment itself is decent but it’s next to a park and public toilets that unfortunately host those sleeping rough and sadly some with mental health challenges. I didn’t feel safe or comfortable at all with my 2yo and this was at 8am on a Friday.
Byron Bay is a popular Australian tourist destination. It is family friendly however it is a bit on the expensive side for food and accomodation. There are no fast food outlets like McDonald’s etc and tourists are forced to rely on a wide variety of local upmarket shops for food and drink. I would recommend saving money by shopping at the Woolworths supermarket on the main road at Jonson Street Byron Bay where groceries can be purchased for personal preparation instead of the high priced street shops. As for accomodation tourists can expect to pay a premium because of the popularity of the location. If you are on a budget, there are alternative beaches which are just as beautiful as Byron Bay such as Lennox Head which is about 30 minutes south of Byron. Byron Bay tends to be overcrowded and oversubscribed particularly in holiday periods.
Nice little park and playground in the centre of town. Good place for kids to hang out and also hosts twilight market with interesting food and cultural items.
The new basketball courts was awesome.
Nice park to visit, kids playground is unique

Byron Bay Ballooning
Byron Bay
Dawn flights over the Tweed Valley hinterland, with the Byron lighthouse visible on a clear morning and macadamia farms rolling out below. A champagne breakfast follows landing. The 5am pickup is non-negotiable, but the light at that hour is the whole point.

Cape Byron Kayaks
Byron Bay
Morning kayak tours launching from Clarkes Beach, with the Cape Byron headland as your landmark and dolphins as a genuine possibility. Accessible to beginners, priced in the middle of the Byron activities market. The lighthouse circuit is the one to book.

Nguthungulli Julian Rocks Nature Reserve
Byron Bay
A volcanic outcrop a kilometre off Main Beach, protected marine reserve status means the grey nurse sharks, leopard sharks, and turtles here treat divers like furniture. Access is via local dive operators. The northern shallows work well for snorkellers.

Brunswick Heads Main Beach
Brunswick Heads
The Brunswick River meets the ocean here, giving swimmers a rare choice: surf or flat water, same beach. Gentler than Byron's main breaks, reliably uncrowded, and backed by low dunes rather than infrastructure. Dolphins at the river mouth most mornings.
