The easternmost point of mainland Australia sits at the top of a 30-minute walk from the Cape Byron carpark, and the view from up here makes the climb feel short. The 1901 lighthouse still operates as a working navigational aid, which gives the whole site a functional gravity that most tourist lookouts lack. Humpback whales pass close to the headland between June and November. Dolphins work the waters below year-round. The walking track loops the cape through coastal heath, with the lighthouse as the centrepiece. Entry to the grounds is free; guided tours of the lighthouse interior run on a schedule and carry a fee. Go early on weekdays to avoid the worst of the foot traffic. Sunrise here, with the light still sweeping, is the version locals actually recommend.

Byron Bay Lighthouse is an absolute cracker of a spot. The walk up isn’t too hectic, just a steady stroll, and once you’re up there – mate, the views are unreal. You’ve got the ocean stretching out forever, waves rolling in, and that proper salty breeze hitting your face. Doesn’t get much better than that. If you’re keen, get up early and catch the sunrise. It’s magic. The sky lights up, everything goes quiet for a bit, and you just stand there thinking, “How good’s this?” Even during the day it’s a top place to chill, snap a few pics, and maybe spot a whale if you’re lucky. It can get a bit busy, especially on weekends, but that’s Byron for ya. Still worth it. Plenty of photo ops, fresh air, and just good vibes all round. Whether you’re a local having a cruisy arvo or just passing through, the lighthouse is a must-do. Classic Aussie coastline at its best. Pack some water, wear decent shoes, and take your time up there. Too easy.
A nice coastal stroll up to the lighthouse not too hard to reach there or if you prefer you can drive up. Stunning view even though when I went it was raining. If you haven’t been to this lighthouse then you haven’t been to Byron Bay.

Byron Bay
Morning kayak tours launching from Clarkes Beach, with the Cape Byron headland as your landmark and dolphins as a genuine possibility. Accessible to beginners, priced in the middle of the Byron activities market. The lighthouse circuit is the one to book.

Byron Bay
Dawn flights over the Tweed Valley hinterland, with the Byron lighthouse visible on a clear morning and macadamia farms rolling out below. A champagne breakfast follows landing. The 5am pickup is non-negotiable, but the light at that hour is the whole point.

Three days is the right amount of time to stop performing a Byron Bay trip and actually have one. This itinerary covers the lighthouse walk, a kayak at dawn, the best dinner on the coast, and a day trip to Brunswick Heads, without turning the whole thing into a checklist. Here is how to use 72 hours well.
The best things in Byron Bay happen before 10am. Farmers with muddy utes, bakers who started at 4am, a woman selling turmeric she grew herself. Here is every market in the region worth knowing about: when to go, where to park, and what to put in your bag.
Forty-eight hours in Byron done properly: a kayak around the Cape, dinner above the sand at Wategos, and enough hinterland to make the drive feel worth it. This is the weekend itinerary that skips the tourist traps and books the right tables, in the right order, at the right time of year.
The summer crowds leave, the water stays warm, and in May the humpback whales arrive. Autumn is when Byron Bay operates at its actual best, and the locals have known it for years. Here is what to do, where to stay, and why March to May is the window worth booking.
Best coastal walkway. We started from Captain Cook parking area. Maintenance and build of walking platform as we headed into Walgun Bay to start the Cape Bryon walk. Highly rate but alot of steps. Safe but busy path. Met a lovely park officer. Best time of year to complete this is May in my opinion. Take snacks lovely bay to stop at and snack or eat. Take sunbathing and water and good grip sneakers. One of the best coastal walks I have completed. We came down via the road was quick safe and easy. Ensure you allow a good time window lots to see. Saw lots of whales blowing but no breaching the day we went. Close views to see this. Bring binoculars if you have them. I hope you enjoy as much as we did.
This attraction never disappoints, been coming to Byron Bay for over 30 years and it’s always on the must do list. Great for a morning/evening walk. Stunning coastal views, fresh air and well maintained walking tracks. And if you’re lucky, you might see a few whales and dolphins.
It's an excellent place to visit the scenery was breathtaking. The little cafe was very good the young lady I think her name is Sunshine was very friendly and polite. The food we ordered was yummy. Even the parking ranger was very friendly and polite.
New Brighton
A coastal heath track on the northern headland above New Brighton, with views stretching south to Cape Byron and west to the ranges. No entry fee, no crowds. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have the headland to yourself.
