Byron Bay Lighthouse
Byron Bay · Activities & Tours
(329 reviews)
The easternmost point of mainland Australia sits at the top of a 30-minute walk from the Cape Byron carpark, and the view from up here makes the climb feel short. The 1901 lighthouse still operates as a working navigational aid, which gives the whole site a functional gravity that most tourist lookouts lack. Humpback whales pass close to the headland between June and November. Dolphins work the waters below year-round. The walking track loops the cape through coastal heath, with the lighthouse as the centrepiece. Entry to the grounds is free; guided tours of the lighthouse interior run on a schedule and carry a fee. Go early on weekdays to avoid the worst of the foot traffic. Sunrise here, with the light still sweeping, is the version locals actually recommend.

What People Say
Byron Bay Lighthouse is an absolute cracker of a spot. The walk up isn’t too hectic, just a steady stroll, and once you’re up there – mate, the views are unreal. You’ve got the ocean stretching out forever, waves rolling in, and that proper salty breeze hitting your face. Doesn’t get much better than that. If you’re keen, get up early and catch the sunrise. It’s magic. The sky lights up, everything goes quiet for a bit, and you just stand there thinking, “How good’s this?” Even during the day it’s a top place to chill, snap a few pics, and maybe spot a whale if you’re lucky. It can get a bit busy, especially on weekends, but that’s Byron for ya. Still worth it. Plenty of photo ops, fresh air, and just good vibes all round. Whether you’re a local having a cruisy arvo or just passing through, the lighthouse is a must-do. Classic Aussie coastline at its best. Pack some water, wear decent shoes, and take your time up there. Too easy.
Beautiful place to visit, I was so in awe of her. Spectacular view. Only ten bucks for parking too- affordable and always good to contribute towards national parks. Didn’t get the chance to check out the cafe but the little gift shop was nice and I loved seeing the history of the place around and on the inside of the keeper’s quarters. Will definitely be back to visit again. So happy.
There's a $10 parking fee for an hour right infront of the lighthouse so you don't have to walk too far. Not too crowded as we were there before 10am. The coffee house near the lighthouse makes the best cappuccino, chai latte and vegan cake. A bit pricey but worth it. Lovely views 👌
My favourite place to go and unwind. I love the beautiful view which is the best that I have ever seen. The coffee shop serves decent coffee and snacks too. Only issue is with parking. We cannot park for more than 1 hour at the top. I love watching sunset and moon rise from this point. It always makes me feel calmer when I’m there 🥰
The Byron Bay Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia and an absolute must-visit when exploring the region. Perched on the easternmost point of the mainland, the lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding coastline. The walk up to the lighthouse is both scenic and refreshing, with pathways surrounded by native bushland and the chance to spot dolphins, turtles, and even whales during migration season. The lighthouse itself is beautifully maintained, with its striking white structure standing proudly against the backdrop of blue skies and ocean. It’s also a place rich in history, offering insights into maritime navigation and the heritage of Byron Bay. Sunrise and sunset are especially magical times to visit, when the light casts a golden glow over the cliffs. Whether for photography, nature, or history, Byron Bay Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience
